Subromaniam told The Star that the new items that’ll be taxed are “Only a few items not consumed by the masses.”
Among the items said to be taxed are certain seafood, vegetables, fruits, tea, coffee, spices, and noodles.
This includes eel, swordfish, imported fruits such as avocados, figs, grapes, nectarines, cherries and berries.
However, according to The Star, it is reported that several items will also be taken off the GST zero-rated list. The items are potatoes, long beans, peas, spinach, sweet corn, bihun, kuey teow, laksa mee, and coconut oil.
The news received severe backlash from Malaysians especially with the Hari Raya festive season coming up.
Around Monday noon, the Customs Department issued an official statement stating that they have deceided to cancel the new GST charges for the 60 food items mentioned above.
The Customs Department has consulted the Ministry of Finance prior to this cancellation.
Guess it's all good now. Back to making Hari Raya preparations, guys!
