A Southeast Asian woman was arrested at Pudong Airport in Shanghai after customs officers discovered that her suitcase was partially made of 10.19 kg (22 pounds) of cocaine.
The woman traveling from South America placed her luggage through an X-ray machine while passing through customs after landing, according to Shanghaiist.
Airport staff noticed something suspicious about the suitcases, which showed up with an unusually darker color.
When officers emptied the suitcases out for inspection, they also found it to be much heavier than expected after one officer could not carry it with one hand.
Custom officials then ordered that samples of the suspicious luggage to be taken for a quick drug test, which came back positive with the presence of cocaine.
The suitcases were reportedly made out of 10.19 kg (22 pounds) of cocaine along with other substances that were mixed in using an injection method.
“These suitcases are custom-made. The shell is made of plastic pellets and cocaine powder using a technique called injection moulding,” a customs officer said, according to Daily Mail.
Details of the arrest were only released on Tuesday, and this is the first time that someone has been caught smuggling drugs into China by using such a method.
In China, anyone caught with drugs could be forced to attend a rehabilitation center run by the government while drug criminals are typically given the death penalty.
